Privacy Policy
Overview
FilmScout Studio ("the App") is a location scouting tool for filmmakers and photographers. This policy explains what data the App collects, how we use it, and your choices around it.
Information We Collect
Information You Provide
- Account information: Email address and password when you create an account.
- Profile information: Optional name and company name shown on PDF reports you generate.
- Scouting content: Anything you create in the App — session names, location addresses, written notes, checklists, captions, keywords, parking markers, weather lookups, and links to permit information.
Information Collected Automatically
- Location data (GPS): When you grant location access, GPS coordinates are captured for scout sessions, photos, audio samples, parking markers, and (optionally) notes. These coordinates are used to map locations, embed metadata in your scout reports, and look up nearby permit offices. They are stored on your device and in your account.
- Photos: Photos you take in-app or import from your photo library are stored locally on your device and also uploaded to a private bucket in our cloud storage as a recovery backup so a device wipe or replacement does not lose your work. Local storage is the source of truth; the cloud copy exists only to restore your work if needed.
- Audio recordings: When you record an audio sample to measure ambient sound, the recording itself is saved alongside the numerical decibel readings. Audio is stored locally on your device and uploaded to your private cloud bucket as a recovery backup, same as photos.
- Videos: Short reference clips captured in-app are stored on your device only — they are not uploaded to our servers.
- Sound-level (dB) data: Numerical readings (peak, average) recorded during audio sampling.
- Subscription state: Your subscription tier (free / Pro), trial status, and renewal/cancellation events received from Apple via RevenueCat. We do not see your payment method details — payment is handled entirely by Apple.
- Device information: Basic device info (operating-system version, device model) for crash reporting and compatibility.
How We Use Your Information
- To provide the App's core features (capturing locations, generating PDF and CSV reports, syncing across your devices)
- To back up your scouting work so it can be recovered on a new or reinstalled device
- To manage your account and subscription
- To diagnose crashes and improve reliability
We do not use your data to train AI models, build advertising profiles, or for any purpose other than operating the App.
Where Your Data Lives
- On your device: All sessions, photos, videos, audio recordings, notes, checklists, and settings are stored locally so the App works offline.
- In our cloud (Supabase): Session metadata, notes, checklists, parking markers, permits, weather history, profile, subscription state, photos, and audio recordings are mirrored to your private account row and storage buckets scoped to your account. Videos are not mirrored — they live on your device only. Cloud copies persist for as long as your account does; if you delete your account, all cloud data is removed within 30 days.
- Authentication: Email and an encrypted (hashed) password are stored by Supabase Auth.
- Subscription: Apple processes the payment; RevenueCat tracks subscription lifecycle events; we receive only the resulting subscription tier.
Data Retention & Deletion
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you request account deletion, we delete your account, scouting data, photos, and audio recordings from our cloud storage within 30 days. Data on your local device remains under your control — you can delete it from within the App or by uninstalling.
You can export your scouting data at any time via the PDF and CSV report features in the App.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data. We use the following service providers, which receive only the minimum data necessary to operate their services:
- Supabase — authentication, database, file storage
- RevenueCat — subscription lifecycle management
- Apple — in-app purchase processing, App Store delivery
- Public permit databases — when you look up filming permits, the App queries public agency databases (e.g., FilmLA, NYC Mayor's Office of Media & Entertainment) using your search terms or coordinates. These queries do not include your account information.
- Legal: if required by law or to protect our rights, or in connection with a business transfer.
Your Rights
You may:
- Access your data at any time through the App
- Correct profile information from the Settings screen
- Delete your account and all associated cloud data by submitting a request through our contact form
- Export your scouting data via PDF and CSV reports built into the App
- Disable location, camera, microphone, or photo-library access at any time in iOS Settings — features that depend on those permissions will simply stop working until re-granted
If you are a resident of California, the EU, or the UK, you have additional rights under the CCPA and GDPR (right to access, correct, delete, and port your data; right to lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority). All of the rights above apply to you. Contact us via the form to exercise any of them.
Children's Privacy
FilmScout Studio is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including TLS-encrypted connections (HTTPS) for all network traffic, hashed passwords, and access controls scoped to your account. No system is perfectly secure; you are responsible for keeping your account password confidential.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, notify you through the App.
